Lets You Go Beyond Nintendo Characters

One of the biggest advantages of modern technology is that fans now have the ability to develop their own content and games. Indeed, the greater majority of all flash games on the web are developed by independent creators who simply love games so much they decided to make their own. Enter the folks behind McLeodGaming; these are the guys who developed Super Smash Flash. This may not sound like anything to the layman, but any gamer worth their salt will know that the title is a nod to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. And for a browser based game, SSF is quite promising.

Close Enough to the Original

Rough is the keyword here when it comes to thinking about how Super Smash Flash is overall; from the graphics, to the gameplay, to the controls, everything feels a little to haphazardly put together. While the end result is still a fun and very playable game, one cannot help but notice how much more improvements can be done with a bit of polishing. Cleod9, the main guy behind this game, was still quite inexperienced when he made this game. That and the short timespan of the development all attributed to the final product.

Still, the fact that this game got made is promising, and the fact that there is already a sequel is a tantamount to the success of Super Smash Flash. The question is, why should you play it.

Made for Gamers

This game has a very niche crowd –basically core console gamers who have free time to spare playing browser based flash games. The gameplay itself is interesting and fun, but it also does not work so well in a keyboard and mouse based control environment. And of course, the game relies heavily on the player’s existing knowledge of the playable characters (after all, there is no point in matching up Megaman against Chrono if you don’t have a clue who they are). So this basically means that game players who have never played console titles will feel a little left out. On the other hand, there are bound to be a few fans that will enjoy meeting new characters. Nintendo fans are likely to already be familiar with Fox, Mario, and Pikachu, but if they have never seen characters from non-Nintendo titles, this helps players become curious and encourages them to try out new games.

Pretty Easy to Learn

The combat in Super Smash Flash, as mentioned, is just like the original Smash Bros. combat system. Characters will meet in 2 to 4 way battles in a 2D multiplatform arena with the goal of being the last player standing. To eliminate an opponent, they must be pushed off the stage boundaries (up, down, left, or right). Each character will have a repertoire of moves (on average, about 5 to 6 moves per character, the sixth attack being an air/jump based attack that is character-dependent), and a percentile life bar that starts at zero. This value determines how a character will be ‘pushed back’ by an attack. Whenever a character takes damage, this percentage goes up. Hitting a character with 10% will knock them back a couple of space away from where they were standing. But hitting a character with 100% will almost certainly knock them off the stage.

Of course, the game is still roughly developed, which means that there is a bit of character imbalance that is present. While the developers claim that the character choices are not tiered (set up in such a way that some characters are simply more powerful/efficient than others), there are a few combat inconsistencies. This is particularly obvious when using a character with a projectile attack and one that does not. Projectile spamming is one of the easiest ways to dominate a match in this game.


The fact that the game relies heavily on character familiarity makes it easy to determine what specific audience it is aimed for, and considering that Super Smash Flash is a doing a pretty a great job at what it is supposed to be: a fantasy-match-up fighting game for gamers, by gamers. Sure, there are still a few odds and ends that need a bit of fixing, but with all the interesting things going on during the matches, it is easy to just shrug those little issues off and focus on having fun instead.
